Controller vs. Mouse and Keyboard in Apex Legends

I’m sure as a new player in Apex Legends, you’ve undoubtedly heard the argument for or against different inputs. It can be a super controversial and confusing topic within the community itself! Luckily, we are going to break down the differences between each.

Controller

  • Most gamers have owned or at least played on a console, the familiarity of a controller makes it accessible for beginners.
  • Aim assist is ridiculously strong in Apex, so, it might be the move if you’re a player who struggles in close quarters.
  • The controller lends itself to an aggressive play style. Meaning, if you like to close the gap on teams, you can’t quite hit the beams you do on controller vs. when you are on MnK.
  • Many players find gaming on a controller much more comfortable and less taxing than mouse and key
  • Certain controllers have paddles and re-mappable buttons. This allows you to more comfortably and seamlessly play the game. By changing which buttons do what, you can edit the controller layout to your optimal setup.
  • If you decide to venture down the rabbit hole, you can access the steam config settings and change even the smallest settings. Some people even use it to tap-strafe, just like the mouse and key players!

Mouse and Keyboard

  • Precision. Something you can not get on any controller, complete control over where you are aiming.
  • Long range fights are significantly easier on MnK! This is because at certain ranges, the aim assist becomes less and less.
  • Movement! I cannot stress this enough, moving on MnK vs controller feels like two completely different games.
  • Aim trainers. While there is controller support for some aim trainers i.e. Aimlab and Kovaaks, it is much more applicable for MnK. If you’re new to the input or just looking to sharpen your skills, you can do exercises before every gaming session. In time and with enough practice, you will see results.
  • Inventory management is so much easier on the mouse! On controller, you may find yourself struggling to pick up or drop the items in a quick manner.
  • A big one for many players is looting boxes! When you are looting another fallen legends box on MnK you can still use A and D keys to strafe, making you much harder to hit. This is an extremely useful technique for shield swapping and getting right back into the fight! Unfortunately on controller you will have to stand in place leaving you a sitting duck.

The Verdict?

At the end of the day, it falls to the player to decide what type of play style they prefer. Both of these inputs are so strong in very different ways. Whether you want to emulate your favorite flashy movement player e.g. Aceu or Faide; or are trying to become a roller demon like the Snipedown, it doesn’t matter. What matters is what is comfortable and fun! Either of these inputs can be played to the highest of highs in Apex Legends!
